چکیده

We present evolutionary models for young low mass stars and brown dwarfs taking into account episodic phases of accretion at early stages of the evolution, a scenario supported by recent large surveys of embedded protostars. An evolution including short episodes of vigorous accretion (Ṁ ≥ 10−4M yr−1) followed by longer quiescent phases (Ṁ < 10−6M yr−1) can explain the observed luminosity spread in HR diagrams of star forming regions at ages of a few Myr, for objects ranging from a few Jupiter masses to a few tenths of a solar mass. The gravitational contraction of these accreting objects strongly departs from the standard Hayashi track at constant Teff . The best agreement with the observed luminosity scatter is obtained if most of the accretion shock energy is radiated away. The obtained luminosity spread at 1 Myr in the HR diagram is equivalent to what can be misinterpreted as a ∼ 10 Myr age spread for non-accreting objects. We also predict a significant spread in radius at a given Teff , as suggested by recent observations. These calculations bear important consequences on our understanding of star formation and early stages of evolution and on the determination of the IMF for young (≤ a few Myr) clusters. Our results also show that the concept of a stellar birthline for low-mass objects has no valid support. We review recent theoretical progress aimed at understanding the formation and the early stages of evolution of giant planets, low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. Calculations coupling giant planet formation, within a modern version of the core accretion model that includes planet migration and disk evolution, and subsequent evolution yield consistent determinations of the planet structure and evo...

X-ray emission of brown dwarfs: Towards constraining the dependence on age, luminosity, and temperature

We observed brown dwarfs in different evolutionary stages with the Chandra X-ray Observatory with the aim to disentangle the influence of different stellar parameters on the X-ray emission of substellar objects. The ages of our three targets (HR 7329 B, Gl 569 Bab, and HD 130948 BC) are constrained by them being companions to main-sequence stars of known age. With both known age and effective t...

Context. Mass accretion rate determinations are fundamental for an understanding of the evolution of pre-main sequence star circumstellar disks. Aims. Magnetospheric accretion models are used to derive values of the mass accretion rates in objects of very different properties, from brown dwarfs to intermediate-mass stars; we test the validity of these models in the brown dwarf regime, where the...

Measuring tiny mass accretion rates onto young brown dwarfs

We present low-resolution Keck I/LRIS spectra spanning from 3200–9000 Å of nine young brown dwarfs and three low-mass stars in the TW Hya Association and in Upper Sco. The optical spectral types of the brown dwarfs range from M5.5-M8.75, though two have near-IR spectral types of early L-dwarfs. We report new accretion rates derived from excess Balmer continuum emission for the low-mass stars TW...
